entre-deux
a single spectator performance for public space
The first version of the performance entre-deux
was set in a public storage space. In an enclosed cubicle, the individual
spectator finds himself head-to-head with two performers interacting
with his shadow. Through the shifting negative of his/her body,
the participator is able to see a live video transmission of the
two performers located in a nearby space, who react and move according
his/her movements.
Through the exchange between his shifting movements
and those of two performers, the spectator actively participates
in the creation of his own spectacle: his own body becomes his theater.
The performance unfolds in between (entre-deux) the space inhabited
by the spectator and by the performers.
With entre-deux, we question the spectator’s
role, notions of voyeurism and intimacy in a public space, and the
impact of technology on conceptions of the body, time and space.
Who is our spectator and what energy is he willing to give in order
to develop his own spectacle? Might liberty and the abundance of
choice lead to stubborn passivity and paralysis? To what extent
does one feel freer as long as one believes that no one is watching?
The socio-cultural context of the location and the architecture
of the space of the work shape the content and interpretation of
this performative installation.
A first version of entre-deux was presented
in May 2002, in the scope of the MAI02 event, in a public storage
space in Ville St-Laurent, Canada. The project will be continued
and transferred to mobile container spaces, which will be positioned
in public spaces like: market places, parks, parking lots of shopping
centers…
